Micro-TESE: solutions for male infertility

At Andrología Mallorca, we are pioneers in performing the Micro-TESE technique for sperm retrieval in patients with infertility. Dr. Xavier Bonet is the expert at our center.

What is the Micro-TESE?

Micro-TESE is an abbreviation of the English term “Microsurgical Sperm Retrieval from the Testicle,” which means microsurgical sperm retrieval from the testicle.

Micro-TESE is a cutting-edge microsurgical technique that allows for the extraction of sperm directly from the testicles in men with azoospermia, a condition characterized by the absence of sperm in the semen, which can lead to male infertility.

Approximately 1% to 2% of all men have azoospermia. However, among men seeking infertility treatment, the prevalence of azoospermia is much higher, affecting an estimated 10% to 15% of these cases.

According to European and American Guidelines, the treatment of choice for these patients is the performance of a Micro-TESE.

How is the Micro-TESE carried out?

It is a procedure performed under general anesthesia through a small incision in the scrotum, which allows for the examination of both testicles.

Using a high-magnification microscope or microsurgical loupes, the testicular tissue is studied, and selective samples are taken from areas that appear to be healthy. These samples are handed to the embryologist, who is present in the operating room, and informs us whether they contain sperm or not.

At Andrología Mallorca, we are specialists in performing this technique, which requires great precision.

Frequently Asked Questions about Micro-TESE?

To whom is it recommended?

Micro-TESE is the technique of choice in men who do not have sperm in their ejaculate, known as azoospermia.

The causes are varied, and prior studies must be conducted to investigate what the cause may be, thus confirming the need to perform the Micro-TESE.

What advantages does it have over TESE?

TESE is the classic technique that extracts a small sample of testicular tissue without a microscope, meaning it cannot select the healthiest areas from the less healthy ones. Therefore, the success rate in sperm retrieval with TESE is around 30%, while that of Micro-TESE rises to 60%.
