Causes of erectile dysfunction
Erection problems can have many causes. There are physical and psychological reasons for erectile dysfunction (ED).
Over time, it is very common for some men having erection problems. ED is not only a physical problem, it can also have a real impact on the relationship as well.
When we talk about causes of ED, we can distinguish between causes of organic or psychological origin. It affects between 20% and 50% of the adult population, and it can affect more than half of the male population from 40 to 70 years of age.
Organic causes
Vascular- endothelial
The main organic causes are of vascular-endothelial origin. That is, those that are related to cardiovascular risk factors (obesity, sedentary lifestyle, hypertension, diabetes or cholesterol).
Associated with prostate cancer
During the radical prostatectomy it is common to injure the neurovascular bundles, which are those that generate an erection and it has been described that 90% of men who undergo surgery will have erection problems.
Hormonal alterations or endocrine disorders
There are many hormones that control a high number of our body functions and some of them can affect ED. The most common disorder is the testosterone deficit.
Peripheral and central nervous system secondary alterations
Drug use:
Many medications can cause impotence, such as antidepressants or antihypertensives. If you think the medication you are taking is having a negative effect on your sex life, talk to your doctor.
Psychological causes for ED:
This type of cause is usually present in younger patients, with a sudden and irregular start. There may be days when you have erections and others when you may not be able to get an erection at all.
