What are genital warts or condylomas?
It is estimated that more than 80% of sexually active people will contract Human Papillomavirus (HPV) at some point in their lives.
Genital warts, also known as condylomas, are the most common benign sexually transmitted infection. Although they are not associated with the development of cancer, their removal is recommended for hygienic, ethical and aesthetic reasons.
The appearance of these lesions can vary according to various factors, such as the state of the immune system, treatment history, tobacco use, among others.
How are they removed?
Currently, there is no oral treatment for condylomata. Available options include topical chemicals or physical methods of removal. Cryotherapy is a physical method that does not require local anaesthesia and allows the removal of condylomas with less risk of scarring compared to other treatments.

What is cryotherapy?
At the consultation, the genital area (penis, scrotum and pubis) is carefully explored and the lesions to be treated are located.
The cold dispenser and the specific applicator for genital warts are then activated and placed on each wart for 20-40 seconds (depending on the size). Until the lesion turns a whitish colour.
The procedure is performed without anaesthesia, as it is painless.
The warts usually fall off spontaneously after 1-2 weeks. Some larger warts require a second application.
