Medications or pills for Premature Ejaculation

At Andrología Mallorca, we study each case individually to offer the best treatment for premature ejaculation to each patient.

Who is affected by premature ejaculation?

Premature ejaculation (PE) is a common concern, affecting around 20-25% of adults, and is one of the primary reasons men seek medical help.

This issue is not limited to younger individuals; it can occur at any age.

PE can be classified as primary (when there has never been control over ejaculation) or secondary (which arises again after having previously gained control but then losing it).

The treatment of premature ejaculation is typically a combined approach with:

  • Medications: Used as a complementary, often temporary, measure.
  • Psychosexual therapy: This is the foundation of treatment for premature ejaculation.

In cases where erectile dysfunction is due to physical factors, oral medication is the first option.

What medications or pills are used for premature ejaculation?

There are several medication options for premature ejaculation that may be prescribed by a urologist, depending on the patient’s individual evaluation and medical history. Some of the most commonly used medications include:

Antidepressants

Some antidepressants, such as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), are useful in the treatment of premature ejaculation. These medications can increase serotonin levels in the brain, which may delay ejaculation. Some examples include sertraline, paroxetine, and fluoxetine. A specific one, used on-demand for premature ejaculation, is Dapoxetine.

Phosphodiesterase type 5 inhibitors

Although these medications are primarily used to treat erectile dysfunction, some studies have found that they may help improve control over ejaculation in men with premature ejaculation.

Examples of PDE5 inhibitors include sildenafil, tadalafil, and vardenafil.

Topical anesthetics

These are creams, gels, or sprays applied to the penis to reduce sensitivity and delay ejaculation. The most commonly used anesthetics are lidocaine and prilocaine.

Tramadol

This is an opioid analgesic that can also have a delaying effect on ejaculation. It has been used in some cases to treat premature ejaculation, particularly in men who do not respond to other treatments.
