Scalpel-free circumcision for phimosis

At Andrología Mallorca, we perform scalpel-free circumcision for phimosis using a second-generation automatic stapler. Dr. Víctor Parejo explains what this innovative procedure involves, without a scalpel.

What is scalpel-free circumcision treatment?

It is a second-generation automatic stapler with a silicone line between the staples to perform circumcision without the need for a scalpel.

This device adapts to each patient and allows the procedure to be completed in just a few minutes, without the need for stitches. This reduces intra- and post-operative risks and makes it easier to care for the surgical wound at home.

How is this type of circumcision performed?

To successfully perform scalpel-free circumcision, the first step is to measure the circumference of the penis to select the appropriate device, which has a gauge with various options (ranging from 10 to 34 mm) to fit each case.

Once selected, local anesthesia is applied to ensure the patient’s comfort during the procedure. If necessary, a frenuloplasty is performed. The device is then placed around the foreskin, and the skin is simultaneously cut and joined using staples that fall off on their own.

Afterward, a double dressing is applied: the outer layer is removed after 2 hours, and the inner layer is left for 4 days. Following the procedure, the patient can walk home on their own, which is a significant advantage and provides comfort.

What are the advantages of not using a scalpel?

Local anesthesia and an outpatient procedure, without hospital admission.

It offers better aesthetic results compared to the conventional suturing technique.

The operation time is shorter, 3-5 minutes, compared to the classic technique which takes 45 minutes.

Less pain during and after the procedure, as well as less bleeding and postoperative swelling.

The healing time is shorter and the stainless steel staples fall off on their own between 3 and 4 weeks.
