The Red Cross Hospital of Palma has set a milestone in urological surgery with the incorporation of a surgical telepresence system that enables real-time broadcasting of complex procedures. This technology facilitates bidirectional interaction between surgeons and specialists from different parts of the world, enhancing the precision of procedures and optimizing patient safety.
One of the first procedures broadcasted was a prostatic enucleation to treat benign prostatic hyperplasia (Holep), an advanced technique requiring high specialization. The transmission connected more than a dozen experts from three continents: from Dubai, Seychelles, the Canary Islands, and other centers in mainland Spain, with Palma de Mallorca. This enabled real-time knowledge exchange and provided an immersive surgical view for professionals following the procedure.
Dr. Víctor Parejo, a urologist and andrologist at Andrología Mallorca, has been responsible for implementing this innovation in the hospital.
In his words, “having a second or even a third pair of eyes in real-time can make a difference in complex procedures. Remote assistance allows experts from anywhere in the world to join the surgery and provide critical information at key moments.”
This initiative is part of the hospital’s modernization plan and reinforces its commitment to medical excellence and continuous training. Thanks to this technology, specialists can collaborate beyond physical borders, raising the level of patient care and positioning the hospital as a benchmark in applying advanced solutions in urological health.
