EcoTriplex penis study

At Andrology Mallorca we perform a specific ultrasound scan to study erectile dysfunction and Peyronie's disease.

Dr Xavier Bonet explains in detail what a penile Doppler ultrasound involves and how we perform it at Andrología Mallorca.

What is the EcoTriplex study and what is it for?

It is the technique of choice for the functional assessment of the penis and its possible diseases.

Its main indications are:

  • The study of the origin and severity of erectile dysfunction: very useful for differentiating between physical and psychological causes. In addition, in cases of organic erectile dysfunction, it allows the severity to be assessed and provides better guidance on the treatments to be carried out.
  • The study of penile curvature or Peyronie’s disease: its main use is to check the degree of curvature during erection and the presence of penile plaques responsible for the curvature. It also allows the surgical technique for treating patients who need it to be defined.

What does the study involve?

EcoTriplex is a test that combines real-time ultrasound with colour Doppler imaging (Triplex). It assesses the anatomy of the penis, the presence of plaques or calcifications, the diameter of the cavernous arteries, and the speed of arterial and venous blood flow.

How is it done?

The test is performed with the patient lying down and lasts approximately 45 minutes. It examines the anatomy of the penis at rest and blood flow during erection, which is achieved by means of a painless injection of a vasodilator drug (prostaglandin) into one side of the penis.

Who carries it out?

The EcoTriplex penile ultrasound is performed by an andrologist who is an expert in performing and interpreting Doppler ultrasound scans of the penis with injection. This means that the test can be performed, interpreted and the appropriate treatment for each patient prescribed in a single visit. In addition, a detailed report of the study and the final diagnosis is provided.

What are the advantages of the EcoTriplex Study?

  • It is painless and non-invasive.
  • No radiation.
  • It is an objective and safe test.
  • It provides extensive anatomical and vascular information about the penis.
  • It distinguishes between physical and psychogenic causes of erectile dysfunction.
  • It examines the presence of plaques and calcifications in penile curvature.
  • It assists in decision-making regarding treatment for curvature and erectile dysfunction.
